Family Command Center – The hunt for perfect pieces on a budget

When I get inspired, I cannot get out of my head the project, I am working on until it is finished. After seeing so many inspiring command centers, I had a list of things I wanted, although I wasn’t sure to the last minute, how it all will come together.
I do not like to spend a lot of money  (OK, let’s be honest – I’m frugal or some simply call it cheap),  so first, I have decided to look through my house, if I can find anything I can use. My search ended with great luck – at the bottom of my daughter’s closet, I found an old corkboard. I knew, that my handy hubby can fix it up for me. He build a nice frame around it and to cover old pin holes we dressed it up in fabric. As an extra touch, I have decided to stencil a world map on it. This little project turned out better than I ever imagined. Click here to see  “how to change an ugly corkboard into a masterpiece”

New looking and simply gorgeous.

Letter compartment

The second piece of the puzzle was a “letter compartment”, which I got for a great price at “Marshalls“. I don’t know about you, but we have a huge pile of mail on top of our kitchen countertop all the time. I thought, that this item will be a perfect solution to g this problem out. It was a really good deal unfortunately in the wrong colour. Simple solution – a nice coat of white paint. A white coat of paint makes everything look fresh.

Free printable organizers

From day one of this project, I knew that white clipboards with big-capacity silver clips are a must. I was surprised, at how hard it was to find them. Most of the available clipboards are clear or in that wood color, which I would not work with my design. Finally, I found these plastic clipboards. They came with FREE PRINTABLE ORGANIZERS. One of them was a great calendar and meal planner that I have decided to use.

The perfect pencil holder

For some reason there is always an issue with writing tools in my house. It seems like they are disappearing. I am hoping, that giving them a special “home” – will help to keep them safe.
As I mentioned in a previous post, “mason jars” were my favorite pencil holders, so I have started to look for one. This time “A Dollar Store” was my savior.  I found great jars with tiny chalkboard stickers – it was love at first sight. We added a piece of wood, a metal ring, and some paint leftovers from previous projects, and ta-da – the perfect pencil holder was born.

Other great pieces

After that I found a photo frame at a dollar store – to stay with the “all white” plan, we added a coat of paint. After the paint was all dry, I used some sandpaper to give it a rusty look.
Then, I found those “@” and “#” signs at “Marshalls” on sale for $3 each. I could not resist. I thought they would be a great addition and add a great vibe to the whole design.
.

Key holder

Key holder – was my second to the last piece. First, I purchased a simple double hook to place it on a white wood panel – but it was simply too boring. Then, I came across the idea of using kitchen utensils as hangers and I loved it. Now, my utensils set is short of 2 teaspoons and 1 dessert fork – but it is well worth it. Do not you think so?
.

Chalkboard

Last but not least was the chalkboard for little Maya. We are spending so much time in the kitchen every day, so I have decided, that it would be great to use up the lower part of my command center’s wall to keep her busy. At least for a little while.
We had an old unused Ikea easel board somewhere in the house, so we decided to bring new life to it. This time, it was more than a little makeover. We (saying “we” I mean he – my husband) made two boards out of it. The chalkboard part of the set was used for Maya. We have added a white metal piece and framed it all together – so we can have surfaced for her magnetic alphabet.
The other part of the Ikea easel – the whiteboard – will be used for my future project. Now, I am so in love with command centers, that I have decided to make one for my preteen daughter`s room, so she can learn how to plan and organize herself.

Big TA-DA!

After that all pieces were bought, made, and ready to be placed on the wall, and it was time to figure out the order to hang them.
You can see my finished command center and learn a great tip on how to hang multiple pieces on the wall in my next post: Time for a big ta da!!! My Family Command Center is finally finished.

Organization is the key to designing any room. You don’t have to spend much. You can create a beautiful and functional room within a budget. For myself, it helps that I am a “craft-y” type of person and I scour the Internet, i.e. Pinterest, for all kinds of do it yourself ideas for the home. I also have those spoon and fork key holders. it was surprisingly easy to make. You also have other items that I sure would like to try to make.
