Number 1: chalk makes a lot of dust, and chalk powder all over the floor would drive me crazy.
Number 2: a big, black piece of the wall doesn’t fit into my imagination of a young girl’s bedroom which should be nice, soft, and pretty.
Believe it or not, I found inspiration in this idea:
Now I had to transform my vision into reality.
I thought that it would be a great surprise for her when she comes back home from a three weeks long, scout camp. I didn’t have much time to spare so I started this project by finding some online images of butterflies that I liked and could use. This one looked good to me:
First, I created a word document to see if the whole concept could work. I like to visualize things I will work on as much as I can. It looked like a good idea, so it was time to begin.
I made my butterfly stencils. Then mark the ‘chalk to be’ area. Then I placed on the wall previously cut-out stencil and painter’s tape to mark up an area where the paint would go.
To create a feeling of butterflies flying off the wall (at least that was what I was hoping to accomplish) I have cut out some butterflies on a painter’s tape and added them on the wall beside the stencil.
The next step was to apply the chalkboard paint.
Removing the painter’s tape was a little bit difficult but manageable and it was all worth it in the end.
I have in front of me the best-looking chalkboard wall ever!
Take a closer look.
Do you think Olivia will like it as much as I do?
WOW, amazing. Great job. Just perfect for a pre teen.
Thank you. I’m glad that you like it.
Awesome idea, excellent execution…BRAVO!!!
Thank you. I’m happy that you enjoyed it.
Did you paint directly to existing painted wall
Hi Brandi, Yes i did painted directly to existing paint on the wall.
I did not use any primer for that. Chalk paint was covering perfectly.
Stunning. Absolutely stunning. What did she say??
Thank you Jacky! She really loved it then. And now 2.5 years later it is her favorite part of the room 🙂
Nice article. I think it is useful and unique article. I love this kind of article and this kind of blog. I have enjoyed it very much. Thanks for your website.
Your board is absolutely beautiful!
Did you have any problems erasing the liquid chalk from your board
Hi Susie,
Thank you so much!
Unfortunately the chalk markers did not wash off as well as I would like them too. when we tried to washed chalk off there were still shadows visible. I have to say that this turned out to be more decorative then practical. But I sill loved it!!!
